Das 1973 er\u00f6ffnete, weltber\u00fchmte Opernhaus gilt neben der Harbour Bridge als wichtigstes Wahrzeichen Sydneys. Wer keine Vorstellung besuchen m\u00f6chte und dennoch einen Blick in die Theater- und Konzerts\u00e4le werfen m\u00f6chte, kann an einer (relativ teuren) F\u00fchrung im Opernhaus teilnehmen und erf\u00e4hrt dabei spannende Informationen \u00fcber die 14-j\u00e4hrige Bauphase. Neben dem Opernhaus hat der vor allem abends pulsierende Circular Quay zahlreiche Restaurants und eine lebendige Kulturszene mit vielen Aktionsk\u00fcnstlern und Stra\u00dfenmusikern sowie dem Museum of Contemporary Arts zu bieten. F\u00fcr einen spektakul\u00e4ren Ausblick auf den Hafen, das Opernhaus und die umliegenden Viertel empfiehlt sich der Pylon Lookout im s\u00fcd\u00f6stlichen Pylon der Sydney Harbour Bridge, der wie seine drei Artgenossen prim\u00e4r eine Design-Funktion einnimmt und f\u00fcr die Statik nicht essentiell ist. Der Eintritt ist zwar nicht ganz g\u00fcnstig und es m\u00fcssen ca. 200 Stufen bestiegen werden, aber die Aussicht ist das auf jeden Fall Wert. Hervorragend aufbereitet ist auch die im Pylon gelegene Ausstellung mit zahlreichen Exponaten, Szenen aus dem Leben der Br\u00fcckenarbeiter und Filmdokumentation \u00fcber den Bau der Br\u00fccke. Gleich neben dem Opernhaus befindet sich ein 30 Hektar gro\u00dfer, wundervoll angelegter botanischer Garten. Die kostenlos zu besichtigende gr\u00fcne Oase Sydneys bietet unter anderem einen Kr\u00e4utergarten, Rosengarten, Palmengarten, orientalischen Garten und ein Tropenhaus. Zu den Sch\u00e4tzen und H\u00f6hepunkten von Sydney z\u00e4hlen auf jeden Fall die viktorianischen Malls. Das mit der Town Hall Metro Station verbundene Queen Victoria Building (QVB) ist \u00e4u\u00dferst prunkvoll \u2013 mit edelsten Boutiquen, Steinb\u00f6den, bunten Fenstern, der vier Tonnen schweren Great Australian Clock und einem Brief von Queen Elizabetz II, der erst im Jahre 2085 ge\u00f6ffnet und verlesen werden darf. Unweit vom QVB befindet sich die ebenfalls aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammende, dreist\u00f6ckige Strand Arcade Mall, die sich noch deutlich traditioneller pr\u00e4sentiert und mit einer faszinierenden Mischung aus Holz und Glas aufwartet. Der Hyde Park bildet einen gr\u00fcnen Gegenpol zum zentralen Gesch\u00e4ftsviertel. Beliebte Fotomotive im Park sind die Archibald Fountain und das ANZAC War Memorial. Die neugothische St. Mary\u2019s Cathedral gilt als beliebte Traust\u00e4tte und Hochzeitstermine werden bisweilen mit einem Jahr Vorlauf vergeben. Das imposante Kirchenschiff besticht durch zahlreiche Buntglasfenster. Der 75 m hohe Turm wurde erst im Jahre 2000 fertig gestellt. Der aus der Fu\u00dfg\u00e4ngerzone in wenigen Minuten zu Fu\u00df erreichbare Darling Harbour ist zu einem wichtigen Kultur- und Unterhaltungszentrum Sydneys geworden. Neben etlichen Museen wie dem Powerhouse Museum, dem National Maritime Museum oder dem Sea Life Aquarium befindet sich am Darling Harbour das Harbourside Shopping Centre, das Kongresszentrum und ein Riesenrad. Am Abend bildet der bunt erleuchtete Hafen eine willkommene Kulisse um den Tag in einem der diversen Restraurants und Bars ausklingen zu lassen. Der 309 m hohe Sydney Tower thront auf einer sehenswerten, mehrst\u00f6ckigen Mall, in der sich auch der Eingang zu den Expressaufz\u00fcgen befindet, die Besucher in 40 Sekunden zur Aussichtsplattform katapultieren. Mutige k\u00f6nnen sich nach Alkoholtest, Einweisung und Sicherheitskontrolle beim Skywalk ausprobieren. Dabei erklimmt man (zusammen mit einem Guide) \u00fcber ein Seil in einem Schienensystem eingeklinkt das Dach des Turmkorbs und zwei Glasplattformen, die \u00fcber das Geb\u00e4ude hinausragen. Sowohl mit den \u00f6ffentlichen F\u00e4hren als auch mit den Hop On Hop Off Angeboten der privaten Anbieter kann man sich eine ausgedehnte Hafenrundfahrt zusammenstellen. Zu den Highlights z\u00e4hlen die Klippen von Gap Bluff in Watsons Bay, von denen aus man einen exzellenten Panoramablick auf den Pazifik, den Hafen und die Skyline von Sydney genie\u00dfen kann, ehe man sich zum Picknick oder Restaurantbesuch an die Strandpromenade begibt. Von Interesse ist auch das Fort Denison, von dem aus man einen herrlichen Blick auf die Harbour Bridge und die Skyline hat und in einer Videovorf\u00fchrung \u00fcber die Geschichte des Hafens und des Forts informiert wird. Wer noch mehr Zeit f\u00fcr Sydney und Umgebung zur Verf\u00fcgung hat, sollte unbedingt auch einen Ausflug in die Blue Mountains erw\u00e4gen. Wir empfehlen dazu die knapp 2-st\u00fcndige Fahrt mit der Regionalbahn nach Katoomba, wo die traumhafte Landschaft durch spannende Fahrattraktionen erg\u00e4nzt wird. Unter der Bezeichnung Scenic World stehen 2 Seilbahnen (eine davon mit Glasboden), ein Board-Walk und vor allem die steilste Eisenbahn (Scenic Railway) weltweit zur Erkundung bereit und k\u00f6nnen mit einer Tageskarte beliebig oft genutzt werden. Bei der Scenic Railway, die mit \u00fcber 100 % Steigung durch einen Tunnel f\u00fchrt und fr\u00fcher Bergarbeiter zu der im Tal gelegenen Mine bef\u00f6rderte, kann das Erlebnis zudem durch unterschiedliche Sitzeinstellungen modifiziert werden. Lohnenswert ist auch eine ausgedehnte Wanderung um die \u201eAboriginal Three Sisters\u201c-Felsen.
